CLAAS Farm Machinery began when August Claas registered a trademark in 1913 in Herzebrock, Westphalia, in Germany. He had developed a design for a knotter, which turned the contemporary straw binder into a far more reliable, productive and valuable product.

After that, demand for these better Westphalian straw binders grew and the company grew with that demand. In the 1930s, August Claas began to look at the combine harvesters that were becoming more and more popular in the US. He could see how they would transform agriculture, but he also knew that those US designs were suited to the vast prairie farms of the Mid-West and not the patchwork quilt of European fields.

He resolved to design a combine harvester that would be suited to European agricultural conditions and, recognising the size of the task for his young company, set about finding partners to help in this endeavour. When none of the other German agricultural companies was interested, he famously said, "Then we'll just do it on our own".

Watch four Claas Tractors Tearing Down the Roads

Claas Launches Combine Harvesters

August Class was true to his word, and in 1936 he launched the first combine harvester to be designed and built in Europe especially for the European market. This was a mower, thresher and binder which worked on the cross-flow principle.

Today, the combine harvester remains at the core of CLAAS business. In 2011 a Lexion combine set a new Guinness world record by harvesting 675.84 tonnes of wheat in a single working shift of eight hours. In 2013, CLAAS produced its 450,000th combine harvester.

CLAAS is still a family business and has its headquarters in Harsewinkel, Westphalia. It remains the European market leader in combines and is the world leader in self-propelled forage harvesters. Elsewhere, it has strong product lines in balers, tractors and harvesting technologies. The company turned over some 3.4 billion euros in 2012 and employs 9,000 workers across the globe. Claas Combine

Claas Combine Range

The CLASS combine harvester range encompasses the Lexion, Tucano and Avero families, with a full range of front attachments. The compact Avero is the first combine in its class to offer APS and it features proven threshing technology. The range-topping Lexion, meanwhile, has cutter bars in widths up to 12 metres and is the ultimate combine harvester, perfect for the largest operations.

Claas Tractor Range

The CLAAS tractor range is similarly impressive, and it includes the Nexos, Elios, Axos, Arion and Axion.

The Nexos is the baby of the bunch, a compact tractor offering genuine productivity and power outputs between 72hp and 101hp.

The Elios is designed to be incredibly agile when working in the field, and the Axos is a superb all-rounder.

The Arion ramps up the power, with outputs between 95hp and 264hp, giving you the freedom to tackle almost any operation across the farm.

The mighty Axion is the daddy of them all and offers power ratings of up to 400hp for the toughest and largest jobs.

Claas Telehandlers

The Scorpion Telehandler family can lift up to 5.5 tonnes and has a maximum lift height of 8.75 metres.

Claas Tedders

Class Forage Harvesters

The Jaguar forage harvesters feature cost-effective chopping and outstanding versatility, which you might expect from the world’s best-selling forage harvesters.

Claas Balers

Quadrant square balers and Rollant round balers complete the picture, offering a wide variety of bale sizes and excellent wrapping technology.

CLAAS is a real European success story in an industry dominated by big US manufacturers. Constant innovation and a hundred years of experience in developing machines for European farming conditions have led to an impressive product line-up.
