Deutz Fahr can trace its roots back to 1864, when Nicolaus August Otto founded the world’s first engine company, Eugen Langen la N.A. Otto & Cie, which went on to become Deutz AG. In 1890, the company then produced its first threshing machine. The firm then built its first tractor in 1894, a 26hp petrol-driven model complete with metal wheels.

In 1927, the Deutz MTH 222 tractor arrived. This was a diesel-engine model with 14 PS. It was a more standard configuration that would be recognisable today as a tractor and it even had rubber tyres. The MTH 222 also marked the company’s move into mass-producing standard tractors. Deutz recognised the need for a more compact tractor and manufactured the first small farm tractor in 1936, featuring an 11hp diesel engine.

In 1937, the company acquired Klockner and the combined firm was renamed KHD, denoting Klockner, Humboldt and Deutz. The new company was now one of the largest firms in Germany and made engines for all manner of machines, including ships, tractors, aircraft, trains and cars.

First Air-Cooled Tractors

Technological advances followed, and in 1949 the company produced its first air-cooled diesel engine tractors, the F1 L514 and F2 L514. The company continued to grow into the 1950s, and by 1955 they reached a significant milestone as the 100,000th tractor was produced. In 1961, Fahr AG became involved with Deutz for the first time, acquiring a minority stake in the firm. The company then expanded its range, producing its first combine harvesters complete with hydrostatic drives in 1965.

Deutz and Fahr Combine

In 1968, the partnership of Deutz and Fahr was completed when Deutz bought a majority shareholding in Fahr, and the Deutz Fahr brand was born. The same year saw the introduction of the Deutz 06 tractor, the company’s most successful model ever. In 1970, the company strengthened its combine harvester offering by acquiring Koden & Bohm GmbH, a combine specialist in Lauingen, Germany. Further technological advances were made in 1972, when the INTRAC series of tractors arrived. This offered multiple automatic hitches, a PTO and an unusual layout with the cab placed at the front of the tractor.

DX range introduced

In 1978, Deutz Fahr ramped up the power with the introduction of the DX tractor range, with power ratings from 80hp to 200hp. This successful range was followed in 1984 with the DX3 series, a compact tractor with engines from 46hp to 75hp. 1989 saw the introduction of the AGROSTAR, renowned as having the quietest cab in the world.

Electronic power shift transmissions launched

The company reached another important milestone in 1992, when they produced their one millionth tractor. In 1993, Deutz Fahr produced the first tractors with electronic power shift transmissions, and in 1995 the company became part of the SAME group. 2001 saw the introduction of the Agrotron TTV range, the first tractors offered with an innovative continuously variable transmission which prevented power loss.

In 2009, the company celebrated 100 years of thresher production, and in 2012 the 7250 TTV Agrotron tractor was launched. The company then celebrated 2013 by winning the German Design Award 2014 for its Deutz Fahr 6 Series tractor and the MaxiVision cab. In this year the company also launched the 11 series tractor — at 440hp the most powerful tractor the company has ever built.

Today Deutz Fahr is a recognised leader in the manufacture of tractors, telescopic handlers, combine harvesters and forage harvesters. It also produces precision farming software applications.
