Kverneland can trace its history back to 1879, when Ole Gabriel Kverneland built a forge in Kverneland village just outside of Stavanger in Norway. He initially produced scythes but in 1882 made his first plough. In 1894 Kverneland became a limited company and was focused on manufacturing horse-drawn harrows and ploughs.

When tractors started appearing in the 1920s, the company moved quickly to start to produce implements for these new machines, and the first tractor-powered plough was produced in 1928. In 1952 the company produced its renowned Silofork, and in 1972 Kverneland produced the first ever reversible plough, featuring an automatic stone release system. This soon became the company’s primary product and was instrumental in the success that saw Kverneland AS list on the Oslo stock exchange in 1983.

A Kverneland Background Video

Kverneland launches bale wrappers

In 1986 the company merged with Underhaug and started to produce bale wrappers. This was rapidly followed in 1993 with the acquisition of Danish firm Taarup Maskinfabrik, which added hay tools and disc mowers to the range.

Expansion since the 90's

The 1990s saw a period of rapid expansion through further acquisitions. German company Maschinenfabrik Accord was added in 1996, the Dutch firm Greenland Group was bought in 1998 and Rau from Germany was brought on board in 1999. With each acquisition Kverneland broadened and enhanced its product offering, with seeding equipment, grass products and field sprayers all now being offered. The company celebrated its 125th birthday in 2004 and in 2008 focused all of the disparate brand names under the Kverneland banner. In 2010 Kverneland continued its acquisition strategy, buying 39% of Gallignani SpA, an Italian manufacturer of balers and bale wrappers.

Kverneland range today

Today the company’s range of agricultural equipment is truly comprehensive. It is divided into the five families of soil equipment, seeding equipment, spreading equipment, forage equipment and feeding equipment. The soil equipment range includes cultivators, choppers, disc harrows, rollers, packers, PTO harrows and ploughs.

Seeding equipment features precision drills, seed drill combinations and seed drills. Disc spreaders make up the spreading equipment offering, while forage equipment includes mowers, mower conditioners, tedders, rakes, loaders, silage wagons, baling equipment and choppers. The Kverneland ranges conclude with the feeding equipment range, featuring feeders, bale choppers, diet feeders and horizontal and vertical augers.

Ploughs in focus

Kverneland ploughs are a particular focus of the company and benefit from the company’s unique steel manufacturing technology. This special forging and heat-treating process results in steel that is stronger than that used by competitors. This high-strength steel is then optimised for use with specific plough parts. By adopting these innovations, Kverneland is able to reduce the amount of steel used in the construction of its ploughs, giving them the best strength-to-weight ratio on the market. Kverneland treats its steel-making as a science. Unique hardening, tempering and forging processes are used to give the best strength and hardness properties. This process also minimises impurities and reduces stress-related fractures to the lowest levels possible.

This constant innovation and dedication to the highest quality in construction makes a piece of used Kverneland machinery a very sound investment.
