Reaping Success
In 1831, 22-year-old Cyrus McCormick took his father’s failed pet project, a mechanical reaper, and reengineered, prototyped, and successfully field-tested the horse-drawn device, which was designed to cut grain and toss it to the side. Although the implement took a while to become popular, it eventually went on to be awarded the Grand Council Medal in 1851 at The Great Exhibition in London, as well as subsequent awards at the Hamburg, Vienna, and Paris expositions.
In 1902, the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company combined with four other companies to form the International Harvester Company. Shortly thereafter, manufacturing plants opened in Canada, Great Britain, and Germany. In 1911, the company began manufacturing implements including mowers, tedders, rakes, and fertiliser spreaders. In 1952, International Harvester Company of Great Britain debuted a line of construction equipment, including the iconic BTD-6 crawler. This model was followed by the company’s B-250, B-450, B-614, and B-634 tractors.
Turning A Corner
In 1985, Case purchased International Harvester’s agricultural division to form Case IH. In order to meet regulatory requirements that would allow Case IH to merge with New Holland in 2000, the company needed to sell a manufacturing plant in Doncaster, England, as well as the rights to build and sell several Case IH tractor model lines. ARGO, an Italian company, resurrected the McCormick Tractors brand from the newly divested assets and began selling machines throughout North America and Europe.
McCormick recently announced its new mid-range X6 Series tractors, which feature 110- to 126HP outputs, cab suspension, touch terminal, optional powershift transmission, and ISOBUS and GPS steering options. You’ll find a large selection of new and used McCormick tractors for sale on Farm Machinery Locator.
