Livestock Equipment For Sale

Livestock equipment is necessary for the feeding, control and transport of farm animals and comes in all shapes and sizes. Thankfully, most of this equipment is robust and straightforward, so used livestock equipment can make an ideal purchase.

Bale splitters are a typical piece of livestock equipment. These are designed to work with a standard tractor via the three-point linkage and transport the bale securely to the feeding site. Here the splitter will quickly cut the bale efficiently and neatly. This allows the animals to then feed easily on the contents of the bale. A bale splitter will work with hay, straw or silage bales. The split bale can be pushed into feeding areas or placed in a feeding wagon.

Feeders come in a variety of formats and can be trailed or static, free-standing units. Trailed units can have pivoting chutes to direct feed to the appropriate area, and they come in a wide range of capacities. Some machines combine tasks, and a dual straw chopper and feeder prepares the straw and then makes it available to feed the livestock. Similarly, a bedder and feeder combines operations to increase efficiency. Hog feeders and calf creep feeders are static machines, while diet feeders can be trailed and have auger feeders, hydraulic controls and weigh cells. Forage feeders can also be towed and offer a choice of electric controls, cross conveyors and auto raising elevators. Livestock and their feed will often need to be transported, so the range of used livestock equipment also includes trucks. These are generally four-wheel-drive vehicles that can double as road transport and can also be used for work on the farm itself.

With such a wide range of equipment, the criteria for inspection and selection are necessarily varied. Static equipment, like certain feeders and pens, will have few moving parts and be extremely strong. These items can typically be selected via a visual inspection - just being sure to look out for corrosion or other damage. Any doors or openings should move smoothly on their hinges. Items that are trailed or attached to a tractor via a three-point linkage require a more careful examination. The connections should be checked and, if possible, tested. All components should be examined, and any hydraulic or electric systems switched on and run through a test.

Livestock vehicles require a particularly thorough test. It should be remembered that these vehicles endure a particularly hard life, so mileage alone is not a good indicator of condition. They may have been used on a daily basis around the farm, carrying heavy loads across rough ground but without actually covering many miles. When checking out such cars, it is a good idea to have a close look at the underside of the vehicle. Here you can examine the suspension and drive train and check for any obvious signs of grounding damage. The load bay should also be examined for damage, as it tends to cope with a great deal of weight. Check out hinges and tail gates to make sure that they operate properly. A full service history is a priority, and a warranty could also be a good investment.
