Plant Excavators For Sale

Plant excavators are one of the heavy-duty machines to be found on the farm. Carrying out all sorts of digging, drainage and ground-clearing work, they are built for the most demanding workloads. Plant excavators also come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and guises. Micro excavators tend to be platform-based and are suitable for work in enclosed spaces, while mini excavators may have a cab configuration and be suitable for more extensive duties.

Midi excavators extend the workload capabilities still further and large excavators are available for the most demanding tasks. Plant excavators also come in either tracked or wheeled formats and can be combined with front loaders for additional utility. Popular manufacturers include Yanmar, Takeuchi, Volvo, CAT, Hyundai, Fermec, Komatsu, JCB, Kubota and New Holland.

The type of plant excavator you choose will have a lot to do with the sort of work you are looking to accomplish. Smaller micro and mini excavators could be ideal for work around the yard, clearing areas of debris and scraping muck. Many have secondary implements to allow them to carry out a wider variety of chores.

Look for good roll-over protection on the smaller platform-based models. Larger plant excavators could be used for more extensive field-based work, such as digging drainage ditches, levelling and general landscaping duties. They can also double up with the tractor in loading work.

Care should be taken in the choice of tracked or wheeled excavators. The tracked models may be suitable in extremely rough conditions, but they are unlikely to be suitable for delicate agricultural land. Wheeled versions, on the other hand, will cause less compaction and crop damage. Decisions also need to be made concerning the lift capacity of the plant excavator.

This is not just a matter of looking at the maximum permitted weight rating, but also of considering the geometry of lift limits. The weight any plant excavator can safely lift reduces steeply as the distance of the load from the front axle is increased. This lift radius will significantly reduce the excavator’s capabilities. Plant excavators used to come with a chart to help operators to understand the limits of the machine, but this system clearly had the potential for miscalculations of weight and distance and so potentially dangerous accidents were a possibility. Today’s plant excavators have a warning system that will stop the machine for extending its operations beyond its safety limits.

Buying a used plant excavator is also a matter of considering the size and type of attachments available. These can vary widely, both in volume and weight capacity. These machines can have a very tough life indeed, even with a relatively modest number of service hours recorded.

Great care should therefore be taken to ensure that the machine is structurally sound and that the mechanical components are in good working order. As is the case with tractors and other agricultural equipment, the hydraulic system comes under a lot of strain and can be vulnerable to damage. Care should be taken to check all hoses and connections for signs of leaks or other damage and the machine should always be tested under load before purchase.

JCB Plant Excavators

The used hydraulic excavators from JCB are designed for a range of applications and so can fit in well as part of an agricultural organisation's operations. Micro and mini excavators from this manufacturer cater to those small-scale jobs that still need to be executed efficiently, while larger tracked and wheeled models are on offer for instances where more digging power, reach and bucket capacity...
