Plant Loaders For Sale

The plant loader is just about as industrial as it gets around the farm. These hardy machines get involved in the heavy lifting and mucky work, digging drainage ditches, loading up trailers and stowing things away. It is an unglamorous job but one which requires strength and resilience — two qualities that should be uppermost in mind when choosing a plant loader. The range of plant loaders available is pretty wide.

They range from small mini diggers, such as the JCB 8018 or the Kubota KX36, to heavy-duty machines such as the mighty JCB 457 AGRI wheel loader.  In addition to size and power, plant loaders come in a number of different formats. There are tracked loaders for exceptionally rough and difficult terrain and the more standard wheel loader.

There is also the skid-steer loader, where the steering mechanism involves driving the left and right wheels at different speeds to achieve a change in direction via this induced ‘skid’. Larger loaders may also have a third axle for increased grip and stability. The loader also overlaps with other types of machinery, with telehandlers, forklifts and front-loader-equipped tractors all capable of doing similar jobs.

The difference with plant loaders is in the complete focus on the task in hand. Whereas a tractor must be a jack of many agricultural trades, a plant loader is designed from the ground up to provide dedicated loading capabilities.

Having decided on a tracked, skid or wheeled plant loader, it is time to consider the operating capabilities of the machine. Chief amongst these is clearly the plant loader’s lifting capacity. This can be further divided into volume and maximum lift weight. Volume is a function of the type of bucket on the loader and clearly this can be altered to suit your circumstances, but load weight is a limiting factor. The maximum lift weight is also a function of the extension of the loader, so care should be taken to ensure that your intended loads can be easily handled with the load point fully extended. Maximum lift capacities vary widely, from around one to several tonnes. Sheer weight may not be your determining factor. For many operations, size or volume can be the main criteria. The bucket capacity of plant loaders also varies enormously, with capacities increasing by an order of magnitude or more, from 0.3 to 3.5 cubic metres.

Now that the capabilities of the plant loader have been decided, it is time to consider the more general features of the machine. These can be much the same as those considered when choosing a tractor, with hydraulics, engine power and emissions level, cab comfort and economy all playing a part. Sophisticated load-sensing hydraulics save fuel by only delivering the required amount of power, while smooth suspension is not just about comfort as it can greatly increase load retention and hence increase productivity. Some models will actually allow you to reduce the track of the machine to allow operations in confined areas, while allowing widening for greater stability on demanding jobs.

Platform loaders should have rollover protection (ROPS) in place, while cab versions often offer lower cab rooflines for better access to low farm buildings. Inside modern plant loader cabs you will find air conditioning, air-suspension seats, heaters, demisters and ergonomically designed controls. Plant loaders are often required to do heavy work, so a robust and rigid construction is a necessity. Choosing the right load configuration is vital, but with so many models to choose from, getting your hands on the ideal used plant loader shouldn’t be too hard.
